MY ESSAYS ( each of them contains more than 600 words)

(All written by Mariam Mirzoyan)

(you're free to use these as an example )

ESSAY TOPIC 12 : Neighbors are the people who live near us. In your opinion, what are the qualities of a good neighbor? Use specific details and examples in your answer.

In my opinion neighbors have a great importance in people’s lives. They are the people who live next to us and good relationships with neighbors are always necessary. But sometimes it can be impossible, because some neighbors  may not be good for us. There are some qualities that a good neighbor should have.

Firstly and the most importantly, neighbor shouldn’t be loud. Everybody loves quiet neighbors. Especially me, I’ve never had an opportunity to have a quiet neighbor. The boy living at the upper floor of our apartment plays drums. And he plays it all the time. Sometimes it even feels like he plays drum on my head, it’s really annoying. He doesn’t let me concentrate or have a rest. It’s even worse when he stops playing it for a moment, because in my head I still hear the terrible noise of it, it feels like someone is hitting my head with a drum stick. I’m really tired of my neighbor, I tried to ask him to play it not that frequently and he stopped playing it for a while, then started playing it again and again. So  quite neighbor is highly required for me.

Secondly, a good neighbor should be nice and friendly in my opinion. We see our neighbor’s faces all the time and if we don’t smile at them or be nice to them we won’t have a good relationship with them. I, as a neighbor, try to be very friendly to all of my neighbors. Because if you’re being friendly with them, they will be friendly with you as well and you can be a good friends not just neighbors. Me and the girl living the opposite apartment of ours are really good friends. I remember us being stranger s at first when they first moved to the front apartment, then we both tried to be nice and friendly to each other, now we are good friends and help each other when any of us needs.

Then, I think it would be better if one’s neighbor was more astute and clever. It’s better to communicate with a smart person than with someone who is not aware of anything.Maybe someday you may need an old book and you can ask for it from your smart neighbor. You can even ask for some advice about different unknown things for you. My friend told me about her neighbor who is really astute. She told that when she has a question she always asks it to that neighbor, because, as she says, her neighbor knows about literally everything. She even helps her with her lessons when her parents are not home. I think it’s really great to have such an astute neighbor.

To summarize, there are some qualities that a good neighbor should have. Being quite is the most important quality in my opinion, I’ve suffered enough because of my noisy neighbor I think. Then a good neighbor needs to be as nice and friendly as possible, because they live near you and friendly relationships are necessary for people living next to each other. Finally, everybody loves communicating with smart people and having a smart neighbor living just next to you is awesome, I think.

ESSAY TOPIC 11 : Some people prefer to eat at food stands or restaurants. Other people prefer to prepare and eat food at home. Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

In my opinion it’s always easier and faster to eat food at restaurants or at food stands. I know many people who prefer that way and I used to be one of those people, too. But after some time I realized that for eating food the best place is home. I have some reasons why.

First of all, you feel comfortable in your own house, you sit however and wherever you want, which you can’t do at restaurants, because it’s not polite. And sometimes chairs in restaurants may be not comfortable. That’s what happened to me about couple of months ago. I was at a restaurant with my friends. We sat down, but the armchairs were so big and they were bouncing and we were wearing dresses and it was really uncomfortable to sit. I even lost my appetite. That would never happen to me at home, because our chairs are really comfortable and I can sit on them however I want.

Secondly, it’s really awkward to eat when someone is watching and at restaurants that happens a lot. Sometimes when people wait for their food to arrive they carelessly stare at other people eating their food. One day I was with a friend of mine in a restaurant. She was really hungry but was hesitating to eat. When I asked her about the reason, she said that a boy sitting next to us stared at her and it was really uncomfortable for her to eat when somebody was watching. But when you’re at home you eat with your parents, siblings and it’s okay if they stare at you.

Thirdly, when you’re at home cooking for yourself you know how you make the food or what you put in it. So while eating you don’t think about if anyone has touched your food with  dirty hands. But at the restaurants we don’t know how cooks make food. Who knows what can happen during cooking. You can’t be there and watch  them to cook for you and you can’t be hundred percent sure if the cook has washed his hands before cooking, or if there is no hair in your food. By the way, that’s the first thing I think about when I eat something in a restaurant- hair in my food. That started to scare me after one time I found a really long blond hair in my soup. This never happens to me at home.
Fourthly, while you’re eating at home you can turn on the TV and watch your favorite program. Though, I know that watching TV while eating is really bad, but I keep on doing that and lots of other people also do.  Or you can turn on some music and listen to it while eating, and I even sing while eating, it makes my food seem better.

To summarize, there are some people that prefer to eat at restaurant or food stands, because it’s faster and easier to get, you don’t need to cook, you just sit there and wait for you food to arrive. But for me, I think, the best place to eat is at home, where you can sit and eat however you want, there are no strangers staring at you while you eat and when you cook and eat at home you know how the food was being done. So for me eating food at home is better and more comfortable.

ESSAY TOPIC 10 : When people succeed, it is because of hard work. Luck has nothing to do with success.” Do you agree or disagree with the quotation above? Use specific reasons and examples to explain your position.

In my opinion the most important road to success is of course hard work. A person who works hard is the person who becomes successful. But for some people there are some other tiny roads that lead towards the success, one of which is luck. Luck also has an impact on people to succeed. But you cannot always depend only on your luck for hundred percent, because sometimes luck can turn to be your worst enemy and lead you not to the success but to the failure. Of course there is always a little chance to success by luck, but that’s not enough. So for me the only way to success is mainly hard work.

First of all, when you work hard you know about your abilities and your levels. You become more confident and sure about yourself. And the road to success becomes a lot easier than by luck. For example, I’m currently working hard for my exams, and I don’t care about luck. And I remember myself for about two months ago, when I was not working hard I was not sure about my abilities and I didn't know how I was going to be successful and pass my exams. But now, as I work hard, by time I become more confident and sure about myself and I wouldn't feel the same if I didn’t work hard and depended only on luck.

Secondly, when you become successful by hardworking you appreciate your success and your current successful position, which you cannot do if you succeed by luck or cheating or something else. And you gain knowledge and experience by hardworking and you can use it always and everywhere. Moreover, people who don’t work hard and become successful, later have some problems. One of my friends was working really hard to get a job that he wanted, I remember him suffering every day, practicing to pass a test to get that job. And there was another person who also really wanted the job, but he was too lazy to work hard and on the test he haphazardly by guessing chose the right answers, so at the end they both got the job. But after few days the person who didn’t work hard for the work got fired, because he didn’t work hard and didn’t have enough knowledge and experience for that job.

So, to summarize, I totally agree with the quotation above, in my opinion luck has nothing in common with success. If you want to be successful you should only work hard. People who always depend on their luck fail frequently and have problems later. When you work hard you become more confident about yourself, you learn new things, you gain knowledge, which I think is really important. And I think there is no chance that you work hard and don’t succeed. So only people who work hard succeed, others who have succeeded by luck have just a temporary success.

ESSAY TOPIC 9 : Some people prefer to live in a small town. Others prefer to live in a big city. Which place would you prefer to live in? Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.

I’ve grown up in the capital of Armenia, Yerevan, the largest city of the country. My city is full of life, joy, colors and there are lots of interesting places to visit. I’ve always been loving living in the big city, but as always big cities have loads of disadvantages that sometimes make me wish to live in a smaller city/town. Unfortunately, I’ve never experienced living in a small town. But by comparing small towns with big cities the difference is obvious. So I prefer to live in a big city.

Firstly, big cities are relatively more developed than small towns. Especially in Armenia, as a developing country, it takes a long time for small towns to develop. It’s really hard for citizens living in a small countries be aware of everything, to develop and be modern. Every year we have a school camp to one of the small but the most beautiful towns of Armenia, Stepanavan. This January will be the 5th year that I visit it. And I remember the first time we visited it, I didn't like the town at first, because it was not developed yet, there were no good hotels to stay at, people were wearing worn-out cloths, so the difference between the capital and the small town was huge. But during some time I’ve noticed how everything was changing and getting better in Stepanavan, even though it takes a long time.

Secondly, people think in a different way in small towns, and in my opinion it’s all because of the place that they live. Maybe they are not aware what is happening in the big cities, or they just know a little and sometimes it’s even hard to communicate with them as they think differently. One time I was at the bust stop and I heard two people arguing, one of them was modern big city citizen, the other one was a villager. They got in a conflict just because of the misunderstanding. They were arguing about a nonsense thing. But it sounded even funny to me. So this shows how great impact has the place that we live, on our behavior.

Then, in big cities you know everything quickly, you’re aware of everything. And everything starts from the big city, people create something in big cities then they transfer it to smaller towns. So citizens of big cities experience everything first, and then the citizens of small towns. For example, the development of smart phones, smart computers and other modern technologies. It took a long time for villagers or small town citizens to know about new technologies, to get used to it, to like it. And some citizens of small towns don’t accept this new technology, not because they don’t like it but because they don’t understand it and don’t know how to use it, because people living around them don’t know either. But if they lived in a bigger city they would accept it.

So, in conclusion, I prefer to live in a big city, as the life in big cities is  vigorous. People live free, happy they participate in lots of activities, they meet new people.  People in small towns experience everything a little bit later than in big cities. In my opinion nothing special is happening in small towns, though people live calmer in small towns, but I still love the active city life.

ESSAY TOPIC 8: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Television has destroyed communication among friends and family. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

It’s hard to decide whether television has destroyed communication among friends and family or not. But in my opinion saying that “television has destroyed communication” is such an exaggeration. Well, actually it did change the communication a lot, but hasn’t destroyed yet. I’ve noticed that the more time we spend watching television the less time we have to communicate with people around us. But it depends on a viewer. I think the influence of television on people has both bad sides and good ones.

Firstly, when we watch TV we forget about the time, we don’t notice how time passes and we have less time to communicate with people. Then, if you’re an active viewer you watch television every day, so this literally kills your communication. You start to overweight television communication over the real ones and by time you can even forget how to talk with people in reality. Couple of years ago I was such an active viewer. I had my favorite shows, I still remember the most favorite one of mine, it was called “Drake and Josh” about two brothers being in awkward and funny situations. I remember how I was forgetting about totally everything when that show was on. I even started to come early from school so that I wouldn’t miss any second of it. While my friends were hanging out, doing interesting things together, communicating with each other, I was at home, being a coach potato and watching my favorite television show. Fortunately or unfortunately that movie series are over now.

Then, if we look closely, television actually can have a strong impact on our communication in a good way. If we watch the right, interesting, meaningful programs our communicating skills will defiantly rise. We can learn new things, new words and other various skills that improve our communication. As my favorite television show was over, I should have found another one, so that if I got bored of communicating with my friends and family I could watch it. There is this channel called “English Club”. I spend about 3 hours of my day watching it. But I can totally see the difference between this programs and the ones that I used to watch 2 years ago. While watching “Drake and Josh” I was wasting my time and making my brain even dumber, watching “English Club” I learn various helpful things. And to be honest I’ve realized that my English skills and communication has been improved by watching it frequently.

To sum up, I don’t actually agree with the statement that says that television has “destroyed” the communication, because in reality it didn’t. Moreover, it makes the communication even better in some cases. I think it depends on a person and on the programs that one watches. If you watch a meaningless program, something that would never improve yourself then of course it's going to have a bad influence on you and on your communication, but by watching something smart and interesting and learning new various things will make your communication even better and smarter.

ESSAY TOPIC 7: How do movies or television influence people’s behavior? Use reasons and specific examples to support your answer.

Movies and television always have a strong impact on people’s behavior. The most  of the things that people learn and understand has come from TV or movies. People spend their spare time watching some films, series, news, etc. on their TV or on computer. So this means that it really influences our behavior. In my opinion it can influence really beneficially, but at the same time not that much.
I think it could be really difficult to live without television and movies. Our lives would become really boring and not interesting. We read books, we have some imagination about the book, but we always want to see the things that we read, in an action. We want to just watch them. Isn’t it great to watch your imagination in reality? SO we have that chance by watching the movie of the book, and it can influence on us in a really good way.
Then, you can learn some new and interesting things from movies, see how people overcome their hardships, and maybe it would become alot easier for you to overcome it if you experienced the same things as they did in the movies. I watch lots of movies and television programs and I always learn lots of new useful things.  For example, my favorite movie so far - “The Hunger Games”. That movie taught me lots of things, I learned that winning is not the most important thing in competitions or in life, but the road that leads you to win and the supporters that you have next to  you is more important. And if it’s a competition you shouldn’t always think about only yourself. Winning would cost nothing if you do it by letting others down. It's not about being the best, it's not about winning, but how you do that. So I think, that movie had a really strong impact on my behavior.
On the other hand, watching some movies may be really disadvantageous for some people, especially kids. They watch movies or television programs where one person kills the other one, or how people transform into machines or robots. Then they try to do the same things and end up injuring themselves. Two years ago I watched my cousin, who was 5 years old at that time, playing a game with his friend. Then they started to throw rocks at  each other, I got really scared, because they could hurt each other. When I asked them why they play such a game and why they throw rocks at each other they answered that the rocks actually transform into butterflies when you throw it at your friend it it's not hurting them, at least that's what they saw in the movie that they watched. This is how bad influence movies and TVs have on children's behavior.
To sum up, I think movies and television influence on people's behavior in various ways. Of course we learn and understand new things, we even can start to think in a different and better way, we can even change our views on different things by just watching a really good movie, but at the same time movies and television have a strong but wrong impact on children's behavior, they start doing all the things that they've watched in movies and they end up hurting themselves.

ESSAY TOPIC 6 : If you could change one important thing about your hometown, what would you change? Use reasons and specific examples to support your answer.

In my opinion everything needs to be changed and improved frequently in my hometown. Starting from the dirty streets, which make the country look even more not developed and ending up with cracked and useless buildings, which are not being rebuilt for no specific reason. My hometown needs lots of improvements, as it has lots of flaws. But there is one thing that bothers me the most about my hometown - the beggars. Here are some examples why beggars are important to be eliminated.

Firstly, we’re a developing country and if in a developing country some people don’t have homes and are begging for money that country is never going to develop. People don’t have homes, they live in the streets, they sleep on the bench, on rocks, I’ve even seen someone sleeping on the tree, I thought he was going to fall down from the tree and injure himself as the tree was really very high, luckily or unluckily he didn’t.

Secondly, homeless people tell a lot about the country and when someone visits the country for the first time the impression about the country is going to lower and be really sad if he sees beggar on every street of the city.  Last year my aunt and her family was going to visit my hometown for the first time in 8 years. I was really excited about that, then for a minute I got scared, because I used to tell lots of good things about the city, how beautiful it is, how friendly people are in here, and I was literally scared if they were going to get disappointed by seeing homeless people around the city. Luckily, no one begged for a money from us when they were here and I was not ashamed.

Last but not least, they get on people’s nerves, they keep on begging money for bread, for food, but in reality they go and buy drinks or cigarettes. I’ve seen it by my own eyes. A man was begging money from me because he told me that he was starving from hunger, then the next minute I saw him buying a drink. That’s not fair. Or even worse, they lie. Sometimes in reality they have homes, they have money, they just lie to people to get more money. Maybe they don't have an education or are just too lazy to get a job and begging money from people is so easy, they don’t need to work hard. So, being a beggar has become a job for them. Some of them are even experts in that. Once, I saw a shocking video on internet, how one pretty girl was dressed like an old lady and was begging money saying that she needs to buy medicine, because she’s really unhealthy and needs to be cured. Then some people followed her and even recorded a video how she was changing her cloths in the car, getting dressed, becoming a young girl and spending the money that she got from people as an old lady.

To summarize, my city is not flawless as all the other cities in the planet. It has lots of disadvantages, it’s dirty, it doesn’t have lots of beautiful buildings, no interesting places to visit, etc. But the most important flaw above all is the homeless people for me. As they have a great influence on the city. And they make the beauty of the city less valuable. Tourists pay attention to everything and maybe change their opinion about the city because the homeless people. Then, they sometimes lie to people. In my opinion they can just earn money, they can always find a job and get money for the work that they do, not just from begging it from strangers.

ESSAY TOPIC 5 : A company has announced that it wishes to build a large factory near your community. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this new influence on your community. Do you support or oppose the factory? Explain your position.

Building a new factory nearby a community will affect on people’s everyday life and their future. The environment of the town will also alter. Although it changes people’s life in a bad way, it also has some benefits. Factories are not created to just harm people, they are built actually in favor of us. So I support the idea of building new factories.  I think it’s beneficial but it also has some disadvantages.

Firstly, it’s advantageous because it develops the country, people’s life, the economy. If it’s a successful factory it will have lots of supporters, It may also be a counterpart with businessmen n from other countries and that will help the factory to increase its level and to be a great company which defiantly is in favor of the country.
Secondly, the factory is new so it has  free work places and it’s a great opportunity for jobless people to have a new job. So the unemployment rate will drop significantly and I think unemployment is one of the biggest problems in my country. Several years ago my best friend’s father lost his job, so he was unemployed for couple of months but then fortunately there was build a factory near their house. So it was a great chance for him to get a job. Just imagine if many other factories were built and hundreds more available work places appeared, that would be a huge drop of the rate of jobless people.

On the other hand, factories may also be dangerous. The first thing that we think about when we say “factory” is pollution. It pollutes the air, the environment, everything around it. There are different kinds of factories, small ones, great ones. But even the smallest factories pollute the area around it. Though factory creators try to build a factory that will not pollute, but actually it’s mostly impossible. Factories are harmful for fruits, vegetables, even water. Factories pollute the land and from the polluted land there is not going to come up harmless and healthy food. Besides that different pollution cause a series of health problems: cancer, asthma, allergies, heart diseases and lots of other dangerous illnesses. I always hear from news or read about how people die from pollution. One time I read an article about a person who was the creator of the idea to build a new factory. He was a hundred percent sure that his factory was harmless to people. He even built a house near his factory, several months later he got a terrible heart disease from pollution and could even die from it. He changed his mind about the factory and finally realized that every factory brings lots of problems, even his factory.

So, to summarize, in my opinion factories are beneficial to the country in many ways. They create new work places for unemployment, and if they’re successful factories, they will develop the country and it’s economy. With all of those benefits that they bring to country they are also killing people. They bring different kinds of diseases, they pollute the area around it. So it’s really hard to choose if its adventurous or disadvantageous. But in my opinion all the factories are built in favor of people but sometimes  it can harm them. So I think they are mostly beneficial.

ESSAY TOPIC 4 : It has been said, “Not everything that is learned is contained in books.” Compare and contrast knowledge gained from experience with knowledge gained from books. In your opinion, which source is more important? Why?

( you're free to use this as an example.)

In my opinion both books and self experiences are probably the best sources of learning new things. Both are really important and helpful. But learning from books and from your own experiences are so different and each makes people think differently. One may think books are better for learning, others may choose personal experiences. But as for me I like and prefer to learn from my own experiences.

First of all, I think personal experiences make you understand things better and the way you actually need them to be understood. Because you may read books, understand and learn from them, but you won’t feel them completely. You start to think the way the writer wants you to think. While having your personal experiences you depend on your own life and experiences, which I think we need more. For example, last year I was reading an e-book on my school web page containing articles written by the students that were going to graduate that year. I read about how exiting they were about their graduation and how they were suffering for their exams. To be honest I didn’t feel anything while reading it. But about 2 weeks ago I also wrote same kind of article, as now I am just exactly at the same position as they used to be a year ago. It felt a little bit weird because I wrote the same as they did, but this time I felt it, because I’m experiencing it now.

Secondly, books may turn you to the wrong direction, because it’s based on someone else’s experience, who has a totally different life and different feelings.  You have never met the writer, you won’t ever know what he was feeling while writing the book or article. You may guess it from the words that he uses or from describing his feelings, but won’t ever feel the same things as he felt while writing, so you can always understand his thoughts wrongly. I have a friend who kept on arguing with everybody. So he started to read books to understand how to be calmer and nice to people. He turned to be sad and upset about everything. He started not to talk to anybody as he was scared to turn it into an argument. The book had a strong impact on his life, it may helped him a little bit, but after reading it he didn’t turn into the person he wanted to be, but from thinking and realizing what he actually wants to do.

To summarize, in my opinion both are good sources for learning and understanding things. Book is a really good teacher for us, it increases the way we think, the way we act but for me experiencing things and learning from them are better for me.

To take private lessons or not to

In my opinion private lessons will never be harmful. In any case you learn new things and you improve your knowledge. If you’re not that good at any subject or you need to improve it the best way is to take private lessons. But taking private lessons is not free and is not that cheap especially when you’re taking private lessons for university. So what should we do? Is everyone ready to pay that much money for just a single private lesson. Are our parents ready to spend all their payment for private lesson?
Well, I think there is a better way to improve you’re knowledge… You can always study yourself. It’s cheap, even free, you can take lessons anytime and anywhere you want and you can study however you want. And sometimes it’s even fun, not as serious as usual private lessons. Let’s be honest, none of us likes private lessons, and pupil who take private lessons do it because their parents make them to, or they are not good enough for exams, but no one likes private lessons, it’s boring. In my opinion studying yourself is the best way.

Everyone can study himself, no matter how old he is, what education he had before, what ability he has, the main thing is that he should be capable, motivated and study hard.

You can study yourself by reading books, watching films, reading newspapers, watching videos, doing tests and so on.
I do study myself, I promise IT’S FUN.

How we can overcome the difficulties in 1-1 laptop classroom

When we were just starting to use laptops instant of books and notebooks I was really excited and I was expecting better education, better lessons with laptops, but unfortunately there are some difficulties of studying in a 1-1 laptop classroom and sometimes it's even hard to study with laptops. First of all it hurts my eyes. I've noticed that some students play games or visit some other web pages at the lessons and they forget about the lesson and play games or do other thing. I totally understand them, it's hard to concentrate on lesson when there are thousands of your favorite games in front of you. And the student who plays games at lessons makes other good students to play games with them, so at the end the whole classroom is playing games.
So what should we do? What should teachers do with that? How can we overcome the difficulties in 1-1 laptop classroom? These are hard questions.
It's hard to make the whole classroom to stop playing games or visit other social web-pages.
I think it'd be good if the web pages that students visit were limited and restricted. After that children will pay more attention to what teacher says than what the game says on their computer screens.

What do I think about Internet

The idea of Internet was first developed by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the U.S. Department of Defense (Britannica, 2002). ARPA, which was under the Pentagon, had an objective to build a network that would allow scientists at different locations to share their information and work together on military and scientific projects.

The Internet is a very good place to book, to communicate, to read, to write, to watch movies, to learn something, to listen to music,to buy, to play games and so on.

Every day I use the Internet, I can't imagine my life without it. Without Internet I couldn't play games, listen the songs I want to listen, I wouldn't make friends from different countries and my life would be horrible and boring. Even my homework I do with The Internet.

The main advantage of the Internet is that communication is made very easy. Two people on opposite sides of the world may communicate with each other much easier than in real life. But sometimes, when people use Internet too much for  communication they get scared when they talk with people in real life.

Friendship

“A friend is one that knows you as you are, understands where you have been, accepts what you have become, and still, gently allows you to grow.”
― William Shakespeare

A friend is one of the nicest things you can have, and one of the best things you can be.
I have many friends, some of them are close to me, some are not that close, but I love them all.
WE are choosing our friends, so we have to find a friend who will be with us forever and always. A friend who is your friend today, but tomorrow he's gone is not a real friend. He's just a friend who was just using you.
Friends are the people with whom you can share your happiness, sorrow, excitement and wonderful memories of your life.

True friends are more than just good friends. They will support you even when they are in problem, without expecting anything in return.
But losing friends is more difficult than finding them. Sometimes friends become enemies, but it's worse when they become strangers for us.

There are big ships and small ships.  But the best ship of all is friendship.
